The viticultural history of Puglia was mainly linked in the past to bulk wine. In fact the producers were all convinced that the cellars could only be represented by bulk wine, a lesson learnt from their early youth from their fathers who had operated in this manner all their lives. Up until the end of the last century, production in the region often exceeded - and by an ample margin - ten million hectoliters per year, only a fraction of which was bottled in their home area. The first major exception however, goes back several generations.

In 1925 Piero and Lisetta Leone de Castris began to bottle their own wines and, in 1943, the house created its celebrated Five Roses, a pioneering rosé wine in bottle (the name was inspired by the fact that, for many generations, the Leone de Castris family had always had five children and also by the fact that there was a sub-zone called Cinque Rose in the Salice Salentino area).

Villa Donna Lisa

This hotel tries to offer its guests sensorial experiences in the world of wine from the moment they first put their foot in the door; all the rooms are in fact furnished with colours and textiles that recall one of the wines produced on the farm. It is situated near the Leone de Castris winery and the "Piero and Salvatore Leone de Castris" Wine Museum in Salice Salentino and is part of the oldest winegrowing farm in Puglia.

The hotel is surrounded by a luxuriant garden that is perfect for moments of complete relaxation, walks or reading books. Not only is it possible to visit the farm’s cellars and taste the wines, but also enjoy the structure’s beautiful swimming pool. The common living room on the ground floor is furnished with comfortable sofas and wine can be tasted at the bar.

Bedrooms

The 23 bedrooms can host up to four people and overlook the gardens. They are fully equipped with all amenities, including a mini bar, satellite TV, safe, direct dial telephone and climate control.

Restaurant

It is due to open in 2016 and will focus on a typical Italian cuisine, with specialities from the Salento in particular, and the wines produced by the house. While the wines are being tasted, the colourful textiles and furnishings will again stimulate the eyes of the guests to accompany them in a sensorial experience through the world of wine.

Leone di Castris Wines

The wine was produced for General Charles Poletti of the allied occupying forces, who wanted an English name for the bottles he was to be supplied with. It was only logical, therefore, that the de Castris house was to play such a leading role in the wines of the region: although of Spanish origin (the family could boast of its descent from two viceroys of the King of Spain during the 17th century), the de Castris counts were quick to recognize the potential of the Salento area of Puglia and acquired 12,500 acres of land, which, along with the vineyards, they had planted, with olive groves and grain fields as well.

Leadership became a tradition and the new wines of the house – white, red, and rosé – now produced with the cunning counsels of Riccardo Cotarella, president of the world’s association of oenologists, are exemplary in their interpretation of the territory.
