Over the past 30-40 years, the Marches have become an important center for fashion footwear. And not merely for adults: children’s shoes are an important activity as well, and the entrepreneurs who founded the Fontezoppa estate near Civitanova Marche, along with Macerata the most important city of the province of Macerata, are among the most prestigious names in their field, working with major brands who export their wares, shoes included, all over the world.
The important of footwear in the regional and provincial panorama has, in the past, led to a lesser importance to agriculture in general and viticulture in particular: discussions of the wines of the Marches tend to center on Ancona and its Verdicchio dei Caselli di Jesi and Ascoli Piceno and its Montepulciano-based Rosso Piceno.
But no more: since the 1990’s a series of highly professional properties have demonstrated, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that this central part of the region has an important potential as well.

The Locanda
The Locanda or Inn is situated near the ancient village of Civitanova Alta, enclosed inside the walls of a beautiful mediaeval castle. The structure can accommodate its guests in its five bedrooms, all furnished in an original and tasteful way and offering the maximum comfort and wellbeing. Guided tours of the farm cellars can be organised and include tasting sessions of 4-5 labels, accompanied by a delicious aperitif.
The bedrooms are all named after the most important wines produced in the winery next door: Falcotto, Frapiccì, Vardò, Morò and Carapetto.
All the bathrooms contain a hot tub to ensure complete relaxation. The bedrooms themselves can sleep up to nine people and are equipped with all amenities, such as a mini bar, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, television, telephone and a complete set of linen, including towels, bathrobe and slippers.

The Locanda Fontezoppa Restaurant offers dishes inspired by the local traditions that start off with the home made egg-based pasta for the cappelletti, ravioli and tagliatelle. The menus vary according to the seasons but the delicious dishes available are always made with top quality prime materials.
The olive oil served at the table is produced directly on the farm, as are the wines that blend perfectly with the traditional platters and even, at times, become one of the essential ingredients. The pleasantly furnished restaurant dining room is also large enough to host ceremonies.

Fontezoppa Wines
A discovery which, in the case of Fontezoppa, takes on the concrete form of a complete and varied line of wines, well made and expressive thanks to the important capital invested and the professional talents of Giovanni Basso, who supervises the work both in the cellar and in the close to 100 acres of vineyards which the property cultivates.
The list of varieties which are worked is long indeed: Verdicchio and Ribona, Passerina, Pecorino and Incrocio Bruni for the white wines, Cabernet, Pinot Nero, Sangiovese, and Vernaccia Nera for the red wines. Unusual, and of particular interest are the various Vernaccia Nera selections: Falcotto, Morò, and Cascià.
But perhaps the most representative wine is Vardò, Sangiovese and Cabernet, the native and the international, a synthesis which personifies the work of men who have exported the Marches all over the world.
