Cividale del Friuli is not a particularly well known name, even to visitors in search of the artistic and gastronomical pleasures of the region, but the city was once of primary significance in the history of Friuli.
Founded by the ancient Romans with the name Forum Iulii, which gave the region its name, it was, for centuries, the seat of the Lombard Duchy which controlled Friuli.

Relais La Collina

This farm holiday centre is situated in the hills in the small village of Ipplis, in the borough of Premariacco and only a few kilometres from the town of Cividale del Friuli, the first Lombard duchy in Italy and a World Heritage Site recognised by Unesco.
The beauty spots and landscapes surrounding the Relais manage to transmit an ancient and sophisticated atmosphere that help to provide total relaxation that is a perfect combination with the placid rhythm of the countryside.
In fine weather, breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace, which gives onto a magnificent view of the mountains of Friuli.

The splendid open-air swimming pool is particularly popular with guests.
The cuisine offered by the Relais “La Collina” moreover includes traditional dishes cooked with delicious raw materials that blend a touch of modernity with respect for seasonal products.

The bedrooms

The recently restored nine double bedrooms, six of them with a third bed and all with a private bathroom, have been created in an old farm building.
One ground floor bedroom is moreover equipped to accommodate the disabled.
All the bedrooms have independent entrances and include various amenities like air conditioning, a minibar, a TV and free Wifi.

Zorzettig Wines

In viticultural terms, Cividale del Friuli remains somewhat off the beaten track compared to other better-known zones for fine wine, Buttrio-Manzano for the reds, Cormons-Capriva for the whites.
But quality production is by no means difficult and, despite the somewhat cool climate (compared to spots further to the southwest), there is also a distinguished history of Cabernet and Refosco-based offerings, joined more recently by excellent bottles of Pignolo and Schioppettino as well.
One of the unquestioned leaders among the township’s cellars is Zorzettig, property of a family which, for generations, has cultivated vineyards on the hillsides of Spessa di Cividale.
The current headquarters were purchased close to 30 years by patriarch Giuseppe Zorzettig, whose children, Annalisa and Alessandro, continue his passionate commitment to the authentic wines of Friuli, bottles which testify in addition to the history, culture, and traditions of a people and a place.

More than 270 acres of vines are no small responsibility, but this does not appear to weigh heavily upon the owners’ shoulders, whose wines, in recent years, have drawn increasing attention both for the regular bottlings and, in particular, for its line of selections called “Myò Vigneti di Spessa”.
Pinot Bianco, Ribolla Gialla, Sauvignon, Friulano, and Malvasia are all well represented but, considering the local history, it is no surprise to find high level Pignolo, Refosco, and Schioppettino at their side.
