The province of Grosseto is one the largest in all of Tuscany, covering as it does a very large part of the region’s coastline all the way to Lazio in the south.
An area with, historically, very little industry, with the exception of mines, and none of the maritime activity which once distinguished first Pisa (in the Middle Ages) and then Livorno in modern times.
It would be normal, accordingly, to expect a flourishing agriculture with a prominent place given to Tuscany’s major crop, grapes.
This is anything but the case, however, and the northern part of the province, from just above the city of Grosseto itself to the seaside town of Folonica, up until a mere 25 years ago, was known only for a few large cooperative wineries whose muscular and alcoholic wines had their principal clientele among houses in cooler and less sunny part of the region.

Casteani holiday accommodation

The Casteani estate hosts its guests in elegant bedrooms created both in the old main house and in the barn.
Both houses are situated in the midst of the Maremma countryside and the farm’s vineyards and offer plenty of peace and quiet; while the interior furnishings respect the past with large tapestries and open beamed ceilings.
The main house also has a central room with a huge fireplace where guests can relax or go outside onto the veranda to enjoy the view.

Bedrooms

Guests can also make the most of the panoramic pool, reserve beauty sessions in their bedrooms or go on bike tours or horseback rides to discover the beauty spots in the nearby areas.
The farm itself also organises various activities, like cooking lessons, based exclusively on the Tuscan cuisine, or tasting tours of the cellars. It is possible to dine in an elegant room on prior reservation. The dishes on the menu are all prepared with farm or local products that also respect the season and traditions. The eleven bedrooms boast every form of comfort, from air conditioning, a refrigerator, a hair dryer and a safe to central heating.
All the rooms give onto different views of the farm, ranging from the vineyards to the surrounding woods. The peaceful bedrooms can host up to two people.

Wines

All this has changed, often dramatically in the new millennium and among the estates which have come to the fore is the Tenuta di Casteani of Mario Pelosi. The zone in which he operates was once called, in fact, Casteani and was known, if at all, for its lignite mines.
These have now given way to vineyards, over 37 acres of vineyards in all, planted to the grape varieties which now characterize this part of the Maremma: the classic Sangiovese, Alicante, and Vermentino, which share space with such international grapes as Merlot and Syrah.
The winemaking, under the watchful and intelligent supervision of Attilio Pagli and Laura Zuddas, has produced in recent years, a series of both typical and well made wines: Sessanta, the fresh and flavorful workhorse wine of the house, a Sangiovese and Merlot blend, falls into the first category, while Marujo demonstrates how well the Syrah of France’s Rhône valley has adapted to the soil and climate of the Maremma.
The top wines is Terra di Casteani, an ample and complex blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.
