Wines
All this has changed, often dramatically in the new millennium and among the estates which have come to the fore is the Tenuta di Casteani of Mario Pelosi. The zone in which he operates was once called, in fact, Casteani and was known, if at all, for its lignite mines.
These have now given way to vineyards, over 37 acres of vineyards in all, planted to the grape varieties which now characterize this part of the Maremma: the classic Sangiovese, Alicante, and Vermentino, which share space with such international grapes as Merlot and Syrah.
The winemaking, under the watchful and intelligent supervision of Attilio Pagli and Laura Zuddas, has produced in recent years, a series of both typical and well made wines: Sessanta, the fresh and flavorful workhorse wine of the house, a Sangiovese and Merlot blend, falls into the first category, while Marujo demonstrates how well the Syrah of France’s Rhône valley has adapted to the soil and climate of the Maremma.
The top wines is Terra di Casteani, an ample and complex blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.
