The Estate
Tuscany is a rather cosmopolitan place, Chianti even more so, but there are few estates with such an international character as Corzano e Paterno, located on the Pesa river valley side of San Casciano Val di Pesa. Property of the Gelpke-Goldschmidt family, the wines, have now, for decades, shown off the winemaking skills of Aljoscha Goldschmidt, Swiss in terms of nationality, but resident in Tuscany from the 1970’s.
He has been helped for more than a decade by Arianna Gelpke, who took her degree in oenology in Florence and is the daughter of Wendel Gelpke, the farm’s founder, who bought it at the end of the 1960s.
Goldschmidt’s wife Antonia is Anglo-Italian and in charge of the cheese production, produced with the milk from the 600 sheep raised by his cousin Till Gelpke.

Farm Holiday Accomodation

The Corzano e Paterno farm holiday accomodation is situated in the green hills of Tuscany, in the midst of the farm’s vineyards and olive groves, and can boast an illustrious past; tombs dating back to Etruscan times have been discovered in the near vicinity and, between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, these estates were the property of some of the great Florentine noble families.
Villa Paterno and its many farmhouses have been recently renovated in full respect of their glorious history and typical Tuscan architecture. The atmosphere is simple and familiar, perfect for enjoying the peace and quiet that this countryside can offer.
On prior reservation it is also possible to taste the specialities of the house, in particular the cheeses, wines and olive oil for a really tasty light lunch.
According to the size, each house is composed of three to six rooms with the use of a panoramic swimming pool and the luxuriant and well equipped grounds of the estate. A barbecue and wood oven are also available in the summer.

Holiday Accomodation

Each apartment is furnished simply and tastefully. They have spacious rooms with tiled floors, ceilings with exposed beams, and in every kitchen dominated by a large fireplace. All kitchens are very spacious and equipped with every convenience and appliance.

Corzano e Paterno Wines

The farm provides its grateful consumers with some of the finest sheep-milk cheese to be found between Florence and Siena, an area where producers are many and competition is fierce. Goldschmidt studied oenology at Wädenswil in Switzerland and the many excellent wines he has crafted over the years testify to the skills that have stood him in good stead while confronting a variety of different grapes, though naturally with the Sangiovese, fundamental for a house operating in Chianti, but Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay as well.
Red wine is the house speciality and the Pesa valley, despite the fact that it lies “outside” the Chianti Classico appellation, is by no means inferior in terms of quality potential to the better known and, in theory, “superior” classic zone.
The sweet wine is made with dry white grapes and is a masterly effort that competes well with the greatest dessert wines in all of Italy. The wines themselves, demonstrate in reality how fallible the theory is: both the Chianti and the Riserva selection compete extremely well indeed with the wines on the “classic” side of San Casciano and with other parts of the Chianti Classico as well.
The more internationally-styled Corzano, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, admirably rounds out the line of the estate.
