Winery Info

The Castello di Gabbiano - an estate whose origins go all the way back to the XII century A.D. and which, in the late Middle Ages, belonged to the Bardi, one of the wealthiest and most powerful families of Florence - is one of the most imposing and best preserved castles of the entire area between Florence and Siena.
Producers of quality wine ever since the mid-1980’s, when it belonged to an Italian businessman, it is now the property of one of the largest and most prestigious winemaking groups in the world, the Australian Treasury Wine Estates - highly respected and a leading force on all the most substantial foreign markets.
This Italian estate, which – in spite of the fascination of the Tuscan region and the keen interest shown towards it by many foreign countries – is one of the few investments made in Tuscany by a house based abroad is certainly not a minor operation, even though it is unable to produce the tens of millions of bottles produced in the vineyards of the New World.

Holiday accommodation

The hospitality available at the Castle of Gabbiano is truly unique: attentive, calm and welcoming, a mixture that makes any stay here truly unforgettable.
This Castle was the private residence of ancient and noble Tuscan families for centuries before being carefully restored in recent years and now it blends modern comforts and charm of the past to create a atmosphere of yesteryear.
There are various forms of accommodation available in suites or in the holiday flats in the old farmhouse situated only a short way away from the main building.
Every corner of this wonderful Castle shows a careful eye for detail.
Guests can stroll around the well-kept garden and vineyards surrounding the Castle or relax and enjoy the view from the swimming pool. It is also possible to visit the farm cellars to enjoy a pleasant yet unusual wine tour that illustrates the various stages in winemaking and concludes on a sweet note with wine tasting paired with delicious snacks.

The "Cavaliere" restaurant stands on the top of a hill and offers its guests a truly spectacular view. It is situated in an old 17th century farmhouse whose large and well-lit rooms create a delightful atmosphere.
The idea behind this restaurant and its renowned Chef Francesco Berardinelli is to make customers feel at home, while offering delicious dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, most of them grown in the garden beside the restaurant, which can be visited on request.
The menu is in continuous change, according to the season, and keeps close to the traditional Tuscan cuisine. All the dishes are matched with the excellent wines produced on the farm.

Castello di Gabbiano Wines

There are currently 365 acres under vine and the production of the regular Chianti Classico of the castle is normally around 650,000 bottles.
Even the basic Riserva offering, which bears the name of the property, reaches 130,000 bottles in a normal vintage, a figure that deserves no small respect.
The 1980’s established that the site was well suited for the production of high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, particularly the latter, and these are now present in the Alleanza, barrel-aged and international in style but unmistakably Tuscan as well.
The Sangiovese, however, is increasingly regarded as the future here, as it now is by the more informed and forward looking wineries of Chianti Classico, and the Gran Selezione Bellezza, the pride of the house winemaker Federico Cerelli, indicates that this part of Mercatale Val di Pesa has plenty to say on this subject.
