Batzella Wines
They did not want a huge farm, just one large enough to suit their creative needs and, above all, a place they could run on their own. No directors, sales managers, coordinators, assistants, or intermediary figures have ever been needed.
Given the nature of the soil and climate and the indications furnished by the appellation itself, it was logical that the grape varieties to be planted would be the classic ones of Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
The Syrah was also added in the interests of experimentation, along with the Vermentino, the principal white grape of the Tyrrhenian coast; the major white wine of the house is based on yet another French variety, the Viognier of the Rhône, greatly loved by the Batzella family.
High-level professional talent has always been employed, always in respect of the territory, and these important talents have been clear from the very start.
The Viognier and the Syrah are used for single wine bottles, made only in perfect years, and come under the name of Vox Loci (the voice of this place). The Bolgheri DOC reds are blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc: the fresh and fruity Peàn and the full bodied, decisive and complex Bolgheri Superiore Tam.
The basic red Digià, with the addition of Syrah to the two Cabernets, completes the line.
